Story: 'Sergeant' revolves around Nikhil Sharma, a dedicated and morally upright police officer who bravely takes up the task of solving a case that not only injures him physically but has a huge impact on his career.
Review: Written and directed by Prawal Raman, 'Sergeant' is a mystery drama that immediately immerses the audience in a world of suspense and intrigue. The film follows protagonist Nikhil Sharma's (Randeep Hooda) tireless search for truth, even after his leg is amputated, forcing him to work from a desk instead of in the field. Raman skillfully manages to create an engaging atmosphere for the audience throughout its 106-minute length. While the concept is well-crafted and the actors outstanding, this mystery drama falls short in execution. The screenplay is slow-paced, but the suspense builds slowly, maintaining tension throughout the film. In contrast, the conclusion feels rushed, with everything tied up in the last few minutes.
The subplot of Nikhil's ongoing conflict with his father (Arun Govil), whom he blames for his mother's death, and Inspector Hyder Ali (Adil Hussain), whom he blames for getting his position despite being physically unfit, gets tiresome after a while.
Randeep Hooda simply stands out in the film, and his commanding screen presence lends dimension to his character Sergeant Nikhil. He effortlessly reveals Nikhil's anger and mental anguish after losing his mother and leg in an accident. However, the use of a foreign accent by Hooda seems fake and frustratingly frequent.
The supporting cast, including Arun Govil as Nikhil's father, Adil Hussain as Inspector Haider Ali and Swapna Pabbi as Nikhil's love interest Monika, deliver admirable performances, each bringing their own distinct flavor to the plot.
The film's setting in London is effectively captured by Jim Edgar's cinematography, particularly in the street scenes of the city. The top-notch production design enhances the drama's authenticity and meaningful songs, such as "Thak Gaye Kadam" contribute to the narrative and intensify its impact.
To conclude, despite the flaws in the execution, Randeep Hooda's outstanding performance and engaging narrative make 'Sgt' interesting.
