What is it about?

Adipurush is an Om Raut film based on the Sanskrit epic Ramayana starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh and others. Prabhas as Raghav-Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon as Janaki-Mother Sita and Saif Ali Khan as the evil Lankesh-Ravan. The story follows the ancient script that was narrated by Maharishi Valmiki. Raghava, Janaki and Lakshmana/Shesh have to go through 14 years of exile. Janaki is abducted by Lankesh and then Lord Rama's power destroys Lankesh's kingdom to bring back Janaki. Over the years, we have seen many versions of Ramayana being presented to the audience. Here's another one with the added power of a mega budget of Rs 500 crore.

what's hot

Adipurush is a recreation of an epic we have been hearing since childhood. We have seen many versions and every bit of it is thoroughly etched in our memories. This Om Raut film is a decent attempt to rewind and live in the spirit of mythology. The Ramayana is an epic that spans over 14 years and has several aspects. Om Raut has tried to include as many parts as possible but the film mainly focuses on the battle between Raghav and Lankesh. The makers have not deviated from the actual story of Ramayana, however, Lankesh/Raavan's portrayal seems to be inspired by some of the evil forces shown in Hollywood's Vikings, Lord of the Rings and more. VFX and CGI bring the film to life. The scene where Jatayu tries to save Janaki from Lankesh is beautifully done. At times it feels like we are watching a fantastic animated movie with the gorgeous jungles and vanara army adding to the charm. The first half of the film has some good scenes which will appeal to the audience. Prabhas as Raghav tries to do justice to the role of Lord Rama. He has fewer dialogues than expected but he gives his honest performance. Kriti Sanon looks beautiful but she doesn't have much to do in the film. Sunny Singh tries his best to be an obedient brother of Lord Ram. Saif Ali Khan's role as Lankesh caught everyone's attention. Coming to the background score, it is quite powerful and catchy. The melody of Jai Shri Ram will grow on you and stay with you for a long time.

What not?

The film lacks emotion. Except for Saif Ali Khan, none of the star cast seems convincing enough to be a mythological character. Even with Lankesh, the makers seem to have taken too much creative freedom. In the Ramayana Lanka is called the golden city but in Adipurusha it is nothing close to being one. It is a dark empire filled with strange looking creatures. With so many aspects missing, the movie does not take the audience back to the beauty of Ramananda Sagar's Ramayana. The main part of the film focuses only on the fight between Raghav and Lankesh and that is not all Ramayana is about. It looks like an out-and-out action film with a mythological backdrop. Some scenes and dialogues are really funny.

judgment

Watch Adipurush without too many expectations. Yes, it's visually beautiful and all but it won't leave a lasting impression. You won't watch the film looking to immerse yourself in mythology because it's all about the action.
