The Story of Selfie: While shooting a movie in Bhopal, a hotshot star, Vijay Kumar, urgently needs a driver's license to finish the shoot on time. However, a misunderstanding with motor vehicle inspector Om Prakash leads to a sort of brawl between the two. Vijay's ardent fans became his enemies as he insisted that the hero must legally procure a license like any commoner, which could take up to a month. But Vijay has to leave for USA within a week. Will he bag the license before taking off?
Selfie Review: Does a small town traffic cop, Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi), take a driving license with a megastar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) seem like too much of a stretch? May be. But the punchlines and performances in the 2019 Malayalam film, the remake of Driving License may make you overlook the weak premise. A nod to Akshay's stardom, with a film called Don't Angry Me, a reference to all the projects he does every year, being called a producer's actor, even his 'jawde wali hasi' is delightful to watch. But Emraan's turn as a super fan-turned-nemesis is equally noteworthy. He has a firm grip on his role, as he firmly maintains the middle-class and humble persona while performing heroic deeds. One downside, though, is that his Bhopali accent falls out at times.
Director Raj Mehta, who reunited with Akshay after Good News, handles the first half of the movie perfectly, keeping it entertaining and upbeat and peppering it with hilarious one-liners that the actor delivers effortlessly. However, the second half, which centers around the face-off between the two protagonists, is not as high on humor. It's worth a look, though, even if the parts that revolve around the license test are a bit stretched. The outing takes a dig at the media incident and judgment by the #BoycottBollywood movement. But, examples of loud electronic media coverage in our films are becoming repetitive and stale.

While the main leads shine, Abhimanyu Singh as a fading superstar Suraj and Meghna Malik as the starstruck corporator, Kamala Tiwari, are impressive. Abhimanyu is hilarious as Vijay's ex-roomie and someone who is now churning out cringe-worthy lines for films and commercials. After a few instances, though, his parts seem forced. Social media influencer Kusha Kapila, in a cameo as a tarot card reader, does a good job. But Meghna stands out, especially with her impeccable comic timing in scenes with Akshay. Diana Penty as Vijay's Naina doesn't have much of a role to play here but she manages to play the classy and supportive wife as much as she can. Nusrat Bharucha, who is familiar with the comedy genre, is a young Bhopal woman and Om Prakash's better half, Minty, manages to pull off a good performance.
Anu Melike and Tanishq Bagchir's 'Main Khiladi' is redux dance-worthy, and the Lizzo George-DJ Chetas title track, as well as Vikram Montrose's 'Sher' are pumped up.
