Review: Detective Conan: The Story of Ai Hybara's Black Iron Mystery is an anthology film that combines footage from multiple anime episodes to explore Ai Hybara's mysterious past. The film also features the pivotal encounter between Detective Conan and Ai Haibara. While it serves as an excellent introduction to series newcomers, devoted followers of the plot may find it less than impressive. The film presents the startling story of the jet-black mystery train, taken from an episode of the Detective Conan series.

For those unfamiliar, Detective Conan, also known as Shinichi Kudo, is a high school student with a talent for solving crime cases. However, after being poisoned by the Black Organization, he transforms into a child's body. The film centers around Ai Haibara (formerly Shoho Miyano), a former member of the Black Organization with the code name Sherry. He is responsible for creating the drug that turned Shinichi Kudo into a child. After discovering that his own organization killed his sister Akemi, Ai Haibara seeks revenge by taking drugs and adopting a new identity to avoid detection by the organization.

The story unfolds as the Bell Tree Express embarks on its annual journey, inviting all passengers to take part in a thrilling mystery-solving game. Little does Ai Haibara know that the owner of the train is obsessed with the mysterious Black Organization. Soon, a series of murders grips the train, and Ai Haibara realizes that her life is now in danger as well. Suspense and danger escalate as the plot takes unexpected turns during this gripping train ride.

The film falls disappointingly short of its potential, presenting a weak and mediocre plot that lacks the thrilling elements expected of a mystery thriller. Despite featuring two strong characters in Ai Haibara and Detective Conan, the film fails to fully explore their fascinating dynamic. Instead, it primarily focuses on delving into Ai Haibara's past, drawing heavily from the television anime's Mystery Train arc. Although the film introduces some new scenes not found in the anime series, it ultimately misses the mark of providing an impressive cinematic experience.
