Does Gautham's past affect his decisions? How did he become Mr. Pregnant?
Review: Mr. Pregnant dives into uncharted waters with a novel and experimental plot that focuses on male pregnancy. The film explores the challenges and social reactions faced by Gautham, played by Syed Sohail, when he decides to carry their child in the womb. The concept of male pregnancy, supported by various narrative examples, is the standout feature of the film.
Although the director deserves credit for choosing such an impressive and intriguing premise, the execution is a mixed bag. The first half of the film could have benefited from better writing and execution. The second half, however, delivers emotional scenes and powerful dialogues that reveal the essence of motherhood. The comedy, on the other hand, feels a bit forced at times. Furthermore, while the film aims to break stereotypes with its central plot, it falls short in addressing other stereotypes and clichés, such as the homophobic episode used for humor. Staying true to the film's premise and moving away from such stereotypes can lead to a more engaging and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
Syed Sohail's portrayal of Gautham is nothing short of impressive, effectively portraying the complexities of a pregnant man. Roopa Koduvayur's performance as Mahi is admirable, and Suhasini Maniratnam's portrayal of a doctor convincingly takes on the challenge of impregnating a male. Harsha, as a friend, and Brahmaji, as an uncle, contribute hearty laugh-out-loud moments. Technically, the film had decent production values.
Mr. Pregnant stands out as an experimental film that fearlessly dives into a unique concept. Syed Sohail's performance shines as a highlight, accompanied by poignant emotional moments and instances of humor. Still, the film is not without its flaws. If you're in the mood for some fresh perspective, give it a watch.
