Review: It's important to note that "Bird Box: Barcelona" is a spin-off rather than a sequel to the Sandra Bullock-starrer film, "Bird Box." Like its predecessor, parenting and grief are central themes in this film. However, "Bird Box" Barcelona" presents a new story that does not provide an elaborate interpretation based on the original concept, assuming that the audience is familiar with the original film. Although Suzanne Beer's film was full of intrigue and suspense, this spin-off left little to be desired. read less

"Birdbox: Barcelona," with its share of surprising and disturbing moments, takes inspiration from recent blockbusters such as "A Quiet Place" and "The Last of Us." The film emphasizes the unseen threats that keep the survivors constantly on edge. This mystery film requires careful viewing as it incorporates religion into its dystopian narrative. An hour into the film we discover what happened to Sebastian, the main star of the film. Similar to the original film, it follows a group of survivors on their escape and search for safe haven. The movie delves into a disturbing desire for self-destruction, forcing some survivors to open their eyes and embrace their supposed savior. In this performance, people navigate the streets of Barcelona blindfolded to survive.

The film centers around Sebastian (Mario Casas), a former engineer, and his daughter Ana (Alejandra Howard), as they navigate the dangerous streets of Barcelona while avoiding a mysterious threat. In this dystopian nightmare, Sebastian's only goal is to protect his daughter at any cost. Unknown to the others, Sebastian has encountered mysterious "creatures" and manages to keep this knowledge a secret from those he encounters on his journey. During their journey, they encounter a diverse group of survivors, including psychologist Claire (Georgina Campbell), German girl Sophia (Naila Schubarth), and pizza delivery man Octavio (Diego Calva). Their only hope of escape lies in taking refuge in Montjuic Castle, accessible only by cable car.

"Bird Box: Barcelona" stands out due to commendable performances by the cast. Mario Casas, as a distressed and troubled father, gives a great performance that surpasses Sandra Bullock's portrayal in "Bird Box." Mario's role in this film is characterized by complexity and narrative twists, making his character fresh and unique. Georgina Campbell, as Claire, a victim caught up in the chaos, delivers a natural and believable performance.

Aside from Sebastian's journey, many elements of the film feel stale and dated. It borrows heavily from the various dystopian-themed films and series we've seen in recent years. The film ends by suggesting a sequel, indicating that more 'Bird Box' stories are in the works. While this horror mystery excels in many ways, it falls short in its writing and character development that we can truly rally behind. The story oscillates between past and present, successfully weaving a compelling narrative. However, the absence of the mysterious creature from the film gives "Bird Box: Barcelona" more of a psychological thriller vibe, which unfortunately lacks any zing. Ultimately, the film fails to break new ground, resulting in a somewhat underwhelming experience.
