Story: Things start to change for Barbie (Margot Robbie) in Barbieland, and she must leave her perfect life behind to do something about it.

Review: For all practical purposes, Barbieland is primitive. Various iterations of Barbie and Ken live their beautiful lives in blissful ignorance of the real world. But when the best Barbie (Margot Robbie) starts having unusual thoughts, she is instructed by another Barbie (Kate McKinnon) to enter the human world and deal with her existential crisis. However, chaos ensues when Kane (Ryan Gosling) tags along with her on this quest.

Barbie's production, combined with its costumes, art and set design, is picture-perfect, immersing us in a predominantly pastel and especially pink Barbieland with a plethora of colorful characters. Played by an ensemble cast, some are given plenty to do, while others are relegated to the background. Although this is by design, it makes some of these characters slightly redundant, though not overbearing. Margot Robbie reminds us of her incredible depth and range as the main character Barbie and is perfectly cast in the lead role. Ryan Gosling is a scene-stealer with an unlikely brand of swagger that effortlessly draws laughs, often at his own expense. However, the ace of the pack is America Ferrera, who is impressive, especially in a memorable solo that perfectly captures the complex puzzle of women's equality.

This brings us to the most important aspect of the film – its writing. Taking a distinctly feminist perspective, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach expertly pull off the complex tightrope act of a self-aware screenplay that hits the nail on the head while being thoroughly entertaining. Using comedy and musical numbers to captivate the audience, the message is deliberately weighted. Of course, there is an open question as to who this film is aimed at, and 'Barbie' is definitely not just for those who play with these dolls. A satire that finally sheds its sugar-coat, this film decisively takes the patriarchal bull by the horns. Quite a risk by toy maker Mattel, Gerwig's style meets substance with her direction that dissolves all debates of 'Barbie' being a corporate cash grab as it will no doubt move to the front row of awards shows.
