Story: A group of teenagers bite off more than they can chew in their curiosity to communicate with spirits.

Review: Mia (Sophie Wilde), Jade (Alexandra Jensen) and her younger brother Riley (Joe Bird) find out the hard way that playing with the supernatural is never good. As they fool around with a ceramic hand that supposedly belongs to a powerful psychic, Mia quickly becomes obsessed with substance addiction. Struggling with the recent loss of her mother and inability to connect with her father, Mia becomes obsessed with the Hand, putting her and her friends in grave danger.

Combining psychic with psychedelic is a smart move by director siblings Danny and Michael Filippo. Danny Filippo takes co-writing credit with Bill Hinzman, and the pair use familiar tropes around possession to breathe fresh air into the horror sub-genre. The concept resonates well with the young characters, played by relative newcomers, who make several bad decisions. The cast understands the brief, and each makes an impactful addition to a group that doesn't understand the scale of their actions. Connecting with Mia's emotional turmoil is crucial to the narrative, and Sophie Wilde is ready to take the audience into the darkness of her nature. It's also hard not to sympathize with Joe Bird's Riley, who is coming into his own as a young boy. Miranda Otto demonstrates her skills to Jade's mother, who does her best to stay one step ahead of these teenagers.

The pacing is quite sharp and quite nail-biting, although the third act runs off some of the steam gathered from earlier. That said, Danny and Michael Filippo manage to execute by deploying mind games instead of cheap jump scares, relying on crippling emotions like guilt, grief, loneliness, and despair to get under the skin. However, beware of some discomfort. While well-earned, it may turn them off for those who prefer less blood in their gruesome offerings. Even so, 'Talk To Me' has enough of the right ingredients to be a runaway hit with cult status.
